Taylorville FFA Competes in Land Use Evaluation Career Development Event

Taylorville FFA students have had a busy fall with several different events such as homecoming, community service projects, and leadership training.

Recently, seven members competed in two Land Use Judging Competitions that taught students how to evaluate land and determine soil type. Students were asked to figure percent slope of the land, evaluate soil structure and texture, determine soil drainage problems, and evaluate how the land should be used for crop production and building purposes. This hands-on event teaches student the importance of knowing how to determine what land should be used for and what type of land should be set aside for wildlife and conservation purposes. The Taylorville Team placed 4th at the Montgomery County Invitational Soils/ Land Use event and 5th place at the Section 16 CDE. Alec Higgason had an outstanding day at both events by placing in the top ten individuals both days. Team members were Louis Depappe, Alec Higgason, Michael Niesler, Alec Minix, Tanner Mitchell, Logan French, and Casey Neal.
