Recently, the Taylorville FFA Chapter was invited to the State Capitol to partake in the Annual Agriculture Legislative Day.
Six Taylorville FFA members were asked to represent their chapter by assisting with the day's activities. Amy Heberling, Brandon Butcher, Dalton Emerson, Merisha Mollet, Alec Higgason, Mary Kate Curtin, and Advisor Sue Schafer attended this event. Student's had the opportunity to meet with Representive Wayne Rosenthal and discuss the issue of school funding and the Ag Education Line Item. Students also met with Representive Sue Scher on the Floor of the House of Representatives. The Taylorville FFA Members expressed their concerns about the future funding problems and explained the benefits they received from their current high school curriculum. They were given the opportunity to walk around the floor and observe how business took place in the House. They were then allowed to watch a session in the Gallery were a Trooper was honored for his service to the Illinois State Police. Students also assisted in making Agriculture Commodity Baskets for all Representatives and assisted them in delivery. Many contacts were made throughout the day, and students spread the message about their concerns of school funding. Agriculture Legislative Day gave Taylorville FFA members a firsthand look at how business was conducted at our State Capitol and allowed students to talk to legislators about their concerns.
