Eleven Taylorville FFA Members Advance to State Proficiency Awards

Recently, eleven THS FFA members won their respective areas at the District 4 Proficiency Awards and will be advancing onto State competition April 6th at the University of Illinois, Champaign.

The proficiency award competition started at the Chapter level in January when the Taylorville Chapter selected the top students to represent the chapter in Section 16 competition in 32 different respective areas. In this competition students must have a completed Supervised Agriculture Experience for the current year and be able to present their project and answer management questions.

The Taylorville Students that won at the District 4 level and advance on to State Competition are Senior Matt Hadden in Diversified Livestock, Senior Eric Winans in Ag Research-Plant Systems, Senior Shelby Melzer in Forestry Management, Senior Riley Butcher in Ag Mechanics Repair Placement, Senior Travis Whittaker in Food Science, Junior Amy Heberling in Forage Production, Junior Andrew Livingston in Beef Placment, Junior Aaron Herkert in Grain Placement, Junior Brandon Butcher in Swine Production, Junior Cole Emerson in Ag Mechanics Repair Entrepreneurship, and Junior Merisha Mollet in Landscaping Placement. Seniors Matt Hadden and Eric Winans were the big winners in the Star areas. Matt was name Star in Placement and Eric was named Star in Science for District 4. These students are now in an elite group of 5 individuals that will compete in their respective areas against the other District winner in Illinois, for the State Title. Students will again compete with their SAE record books and perform in an interview by presenting their project and answering questions.

Taylorville had 26 students win at the Section level and compete at the District competition. Other THS FFA members that competed at Districts were Jared Frye, Luke Verardi, Alec Myers, Ben Hogge, Brock Letcher, Briar Beck, Ross Carls, Darian Norville, Kyle Tex, Lane Bollinger, Aundrea Marsh, and Joel Ashburn.
